What about this page!

I was referred to an atheist's blog post that supposedly presents ten questions a Christian can't answer. That page is located here.

Some of the question are answered in "Did God Really Say?". But, I went ahead and specifically answered the first five on this web site. The answers are here: 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5.

The atheist's page was in answer to a Christian page quoted by the atheist here: The Christian Poses Tough Questions to the Atheist. Here are the first five questions the Christian asked atheists to answer:

  1. How Did the Universe Come Into Being?
  2. Why Does There Appear to Be Design (Fine Tuning) in the Universe?
  3. How Did Life Originate?
  4. Why Does There Appear to Be Evidence of Intelligence in Biology?
  5. How Did Human Consciousness Come Into Being?

(Click here for THE three questions the Christian should have asked.)

How did the atheist answer these five questions? With a lot of excuses, misinformation (scientific error), and propaganda. Here is a summary:

How Did the Universe Come Into Being?

The Atheist's Answer: I don’t know what caused the universe. I don’t even know if asking about a cause (which implies an action through time) even makes sense before time. (And I say “I don’t know” simply because I’m parroting the consensus view of physics. If that changes, so will my opinion.)

But there’s nothing embarrassing about pointing out where we don’t know things. Science has plenty of unanswered questions, and highlighting them shows where work needs to be done. It’s not like we've ever learned anything new about nature through holy books or divine revelation.

Note also that quantum events may not have causes, and the Big Bang was a quantum event. There’s no reason to demand a Big Banger, some supernatural First Cause.

Comments: The atheist's answer can be summarized as: physicists don't know the answer to this question, and there are a lot of unanswered questions.

There is something interesting to note about this answer. It is considered a valid answer for atheists, but not for Christians. If a question is posed to a Christian, and our answer is, "I don't know." The response is, "Aha! Then Christianity must be false. You don't have an answer." But, under their "rules" they are allowed to give this answer. That's what is called hypocrisy.

Most questions about the Bible that atheists raise have answers. However, there are some questions the Bible does not answer, and we won't have those answers until we join Jesus Christ in heaven.

The atheist mentions quantum events, and then presents false science. When working with extremely tiny particles scientists observe what are called “virtual particles” emerging, apparently without a cause, from an empty vacuum. They then say that if this happens in the quantum realm, then something can come from nothing in the larger world. But, there's a problem. A quantum vacuum is not empty.

A quantum vacuum is a field with a very low energy level. That means it is not nothing and the particles are not coming from nothing. In a NY Times Book Review. Columbia University Philosopher and theoretical physicist David Albert writes,

Relativistic-quantum-field-theoretical vacuum states — no less than giraffes or refrigerators or solar systems — are particular arrangements of elementary physical stuff. The true relativistic-quantum-field-theoretical equivalent to there not being any physical stuff at all isn't this or that particular arrangement of the fields — what it is (obviously, and ineluctably, and on the contrary) is the simple absence of the fields! The fact that some arrangements of fields happen to correspond to the existence of particles and some don’t is not a whit more mysterious than the fact that some of the possible arrangements of my fingers happen to correspond to the existence of a fist and some don’t. And the fact that particles can pop in and out of existence, over time, as those fields rearrange themselves, is not a whit more mysterious than the fact that fists can pop in and out of existence, over time, as my fingers rearrange themselves. And none of these poppings — if you look at them aright — amount to anything even remotely in the neighborhood of a creation from nothing.

Why Does There Appear to Be Design (Fine Tuning) in the Universe?

The Atheist's Answer: The quick answer to this question is the multiverse—an almost infinite number of other universes defined by different constants. Most of them might be sterile, but there are enough to make one or more life giving. A multiverse is predicted by well-established physics—both string theory and inflation.

Comments: Multiverse... meaning there are nearly an infinite number of universes. Some almost exactly like our own. Some that are very different than our own. Has anyone ever observed one of these other universes? No. Has anyone been able to detect any evidence of other universes? No. Let me see if I understand this correctly. I am supposed to believe in something that is invisible, undetectable, and does not interact with our universe in any way. And what do atheists say about God? "It's not rational to believe in something that is invisible, undetectable, and does not interact with this world." Hypocrites! (Please keep in mind that God does interact with this world, and those interactions are observable and have been recorded.)

What about "inflation." What is that?

It's another unproved, unobserved guess. The idea is that what is called "eternal inflation" can create other universes. What supposedly happened is that as the original universe expanded rapidly after the Big Bang, some pockets of space stop inflating, creating bubbles. Within these bubbles inflation ended allowing stars and galaxies to form. Each of these bubbles are unique, to the point that even the laws of physics and fundamental constants may be different. Our bubble is the one in which everything is just right for life to exist.

The objective of both of these unsubstantiated stories is to create a scenario in which a sufficient number of galaxies are produced such that one of them randomly turns out to have exactly the right conditions for life... our universe. Basically what we have are people who understand that the fine tuning of the universe is direct proof of God. They are unwilling to accept that truth. What are they doing? They "suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them." - Romans 1:18 & 19.

Their only option is to invent theories that give them a way out. Theories that postulate things that are invisible, undetectable, and that do not interact with "our universe." Exactly what they say they will not accept when it comes to God.

How Did Life Originate?

The Atheist's Answer: Though science has lots of ideas, it doesn’t have a good theory. Nevertheless, science not having an answer gives nothing to the Christian side of the question.

Comments: One again the atheist's answer of "I don't know." is taken as being acceptable. A Christian giving the same answer is vilified. The atheist is right in saying that it is not correct to assume that because an atheist does not know the answer, that means God exists and God is the source of all life. All it means is that the atheist does not know the answer. Maybe he chooses to ignore the evidence of design. Maybe he is just ignorant of the evidence of design. Or maybe, as scripture says, he willingly suppresses the truth in unrighteousness. Whatever the reason is (I'll go with the Biblical one), the atheist's supposed "ignorance" of God does not mean there is no God. And the atheist's ignorance of how life originated, does not mean God did not create everything in six days, six thousand years ago.

On the other hand Christians do have an answer, and that answer fits perfectly with all of the evidence. Based on mathematical probability, and the observed beneficial mutation rate, it is impossible for even a microbe to have "evolved" in the available time. Yet, atheists ignore this. For a dinosaur to evolve to become a bird involve changes (such as to the lungs) that would kill the animal. Yet, atheists ignore this fact. That information never results from randomness, and that one of the most densely packed information storage systems (DNA) could never have arisen and accumulated information randomly is ignored and brushed aside as being inconsequential... ignored by atheists. And the list goes on and on... the evidence is clear. God created you. And you are accountable to God.

But... the atheist tries to address some of these in the next question...

Why Does There Appear to Be Evidence of Intelligence in Biology?

The atheist's Answer: Is the marvelous complexity we see in the cell a clue to an omniscient designer? Or is this clumsy, non-optimal Rube Goldberg machine actually evidence for evolution? Biologists are satisfied that evolution explains it. Laymen have no grounds by which to reject the scientific consensus as the best provisional explanation we have.

As for DNA being strong evidence for intelligence, guess again. In fact, DNA alone demolishes this Argument from Design. DNA is a sloppy record of evolution, not the perfect blueprint of an omniscient designer.

The Christian might point out that for every instance of information, we find an intelligence behind it. That may be so, but for every instance of intelligently caused information, that intelligence is natural, not supernatural.

Comments: For all of their devotion to science, I'm continually surprise by how often atheists reject science and turn to myth and conjecture. For example, they call DNA a "sloppy record of evolution" because the majority of our DNA is supposed composed of useless junk left over from failed mutations. It turns out that what they call "junk DNA" is actually functional and critical to life. (Read this article in Scientific American). Yes, in reality, DNA is the "perfect blueprint" (now marred by the entropic effects of sin and the fall) of an omniscient designer.

"Intelligence that is nature???" What is that? Atheists like to attribute "intelligence" to natural selection. They speak of changes in biology, as though there is an intelligence in _______ that directs those changes. Where is that intelligence? Where does it come from? How does it work? How does it make decisions? The reality is that God has built adaptability into every organism. Life can adapt to changing conditions. The intelligence behind this is God. And that living thinga adapt, DOES NOT mean one type of life adapts to such a degree that it becomes a different type of life (evolution). It does mean that there is variability, in response to the environment, that can be inherited. To learn more about this look up epigenetics.

Final Question: How Did Human Consciousness Come Into Being?

The atheist's answer: We have plenty to learn about consciousness, that’s certainly true. Again, science’s long list of unanswered questions does nothing to support the Christian claim

Comments: Once again the atheist turns to the "we don't know" defense. The original claim was that these are questions the atheist cannot answer. That is turning out to be true.

Be careful of atheist's attempts to give an answer to this question. Before this question can be answered scientifically, the term "human consciousness" needs to be defined. This includes the question of morality. Human consciousness includes the awareness of right and wrong. Why is raping a 12 year old wrong? Why is murder wrong? Why is there a common awareness that these are wrong?

Here are three much better questions to ask an atheist, or anyone. These are the three questions most people want answered.

Another Question For The Atheist

It is obvious that A LOT of effort has gone into attempting to come up with naturalistic explanations for the overwhelming evidence that reveals your creator God exists. The a priori assumption is that evolution is true, and God does not exist. Have you ever examined both sides of this question with an open mind? Honestlty evaulated the evidence? Not just questioning the truth of the Bible, but seaching to see if there are legitimate answers to your questions. Then evaulate those answers.

In addition...

Have you ever truly evaluated Christianity? There are so many false representations of Christianity. What I'm talking about is true Biblical Christianity? I've put together a short web page that explains Christianity in simple terms.
